Businesses in Lincoln
Lincoln's economy predominantly consists of public sector, commerce, arable farming and tourism.
Many large industrial warehouse-like buildings, vacated by Lincoln's former industrial giants, are now multi-occupant units, used by companies such as Lincs FM radio station (in the Titanic Works) and LA Fitness gym.
Like many other British cities, Lincoln has a growing IT economy, with many e-commerce mail order companies setting up in the area. A plethora of other, more conventional small industrial businesses are located in and around the city.
The University has increased inward investment and acted as a springboard for small companies. A recent example is Think Tank, a small business unit that opened next to a University accommodation building in June 2009. The University's presence has also attracted numerous licensed premises to the Brayford Pool area of the city centre.
Motorway services company Extra, whose parent company Swayfields builds most new UK service areas, is based on Castle Hill. Lincoln’s two main electronics companies are e2V, situated next-door to Carholme Golf Club, and Dynex Semiconductor (formerly Marconi Electronic Devices), on Doddington Road.
