Lincoln in the Viking Age
In the centuries following the first destructive Viking raids, the city once again rose to prominence. After the establishment of Danelaw in 886, Lincoln became one of The Five Boroughs in the East Midlands, and by the mid-11th century was one of the country's principal settlements. By this time it was a Viking commercial and trading centre with a population of 6,000 to 8,000, and was influential enough to issue coins from its own mint.
